Remarkably, no one appears to be freaking out much at all.

The Swedish family appears to be taking this as another adventure. Elsa’s already stopped sniffling and is asking a million questions about the jungle. Well, I assume she is. She’s definitely pointing at things and speaking rapidly in a questioning tone. Each time she does this, her father or mother reply. I know the routine well. Reminds me of my kids at that age.

A few minutes into our hike, we reach a small tributary of the Amazon. The branching river is tiny enough that a single fallen tree now serves as a bridge across. I say ‘fallen tree,’ though it looks like the conscious work of humans. Someone cut the tree down and made a bridge out of it, likely years ago. The top portion of the log has been flattened to make it easier to walk on.

It’s not the sturdiest or most stable of bridges I’ve ever seen. At least the water looks calm.

Paxton whispers, “Mom, the pilot is really nervous about that tree. Why?”

“Maybe there’s piranha in the water,” says Tammy, shrugging. “Or maybe the guy can’t swim?”

Humberto stops at the tree bridge. “Single file. Go slow and be careful. We don’t have life preservers.”

Pax shivers. “Yeah, he’s definitely afraid someone’s going to fall in.”

There are demons around—that much I do know. It’s almost a guarantee someone is going to fall in. Especially if there are deadly fish in that water. Or snakes. Or alligators. I dunno. Do alligators exist here? Wait, I think they’re called caiman down here.

Either way.

As we make our way onto the tree bridge, I keep my attention on Tammy, Paxton, and little Elsa. If demons are going to torment me, those are the most likely targets for their mischief. Obviously, attacking my kids is going to hurt me more, but I would never be able to forgive myself if I watched a seven-year-old succumb to a school of piranha.

My senses are on full alert, my reflexes primed. Yeah, it’s going to make crossing this bridge feel like it takes forever… but it’s worth it. I will not allow anything to happen.

Demons are nothing if not predictable.

We’re about halfway across the tree when one of the little bastards appears out from below the log. It reaches up and grabs onto one of the dangling straps of Paxton’s backpack, then yanks downward. She flails her arms and careens to the side, falling toward the water. I snap my arm out, grab the backpack, and pull her back upright… and don’t let go.

Paxton stops walking, shaking in place.

Humberto whirls to look behind him at the disturbance, then appears confused. It all happened so fast he likely didn’t see anything at all. I keep hold of her backpack the rest of the way across the tree. Once we’re on solid ground again, Pax cling-hugs me.

“Did I trip?” she whispers after a moment of walking.

“No.”

“Didn’t think so.” She grumbles. “Something pulled on my pack.”

I sigh. “Yeah.”

Allison gives me side eye, and says telepathically: Might be time to kill those little bastards.
